Let’s get to work

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I am grateful for the confidence that voters of Bar Harbor, Mount Desert, and Lamoine have placed in me to represent this district for another term in the state legislature.

Over the last few months, as most of you know, I traveled over a thousand miles on my bicycle visiting nearly 4500 doors of every voter in this district.  I value every one of those conversations and, in sum, they renew my courage to speak up for the common decency and earnest hopes of our communities.

In this twilight of diverging common discourse trailing the presidential election, I also know that many of you are deeply worried about what the future holds for diminished civil liberties, destabilized security, and unchecked climate change.

I share those concerns. But I assure you that this next Maine Legislature will understand its critical role as a firewall against potential assaults on civil rights or radical economic exploitation.

Last session, when the Governor declared a policy of vetoing every enacted bill irrespective of its merits, the legislature supported 12 of my bills all the way into statute. As far as I know, no other legislator had nearly that measure of success and I am deeply grateful to my colleagues on both sides of the aisle for that support.

I intend to continue to work as hard for you in this next session and to build on those successes in support of education, science research, economic development, transportation infrastructure, and a sustainable energy policy for the state.  I’ll follow up in a few weeks with a more detailed outline of what I’ve been working on this fall and what I hope to move forward in January.

Towards that end, I am interested in hearing from you over the next few weeks as the agendas clarify for the upcoming session.  Many of you have already approached me about policies you would like championed.  Now is the time for us to roll up our sleeves and firm up those proposals.

Let’s get to work. Email me and let me know if you’d like to meet with me over coffee.
